Frequently asked questions

Starting counselling can feel like a big step. Here are answers to some common questions to help you feel more comfortable.

How long will I wait for an appointment?

I aim to offer a first appointment within 1 to 3 days of your enquiry. After that, we'll arrange regular sessions at a time that suits you.

How much does counselling cost?

Sessions are £40 for 50 minutes. Your first 15-minute phone call is free, and I offer a reduced rate for people on a low income.

What if I don't know what to say?

You don't need to prepare anything. It can be hard to put feelings into words, and that's okay. We'll take our time and explore things together.

Is everything I say confidential?

What you share is kept private, within the limits of confidentiality. I'll explain these before we begin. Information may need to be shared if there's a serious risk of harm or a legal duty.

Will I be judged for what I say?

No. Counselling is a space to explore your thoughts and feelings without judgement. You don't need to present yourself in a particular way.

Do I need a specific problem to come to counselling?

Not at all. You might feel anxious, stressed or sad, or be going through a big change. Or you might just feel something isn't quite right.

What if I get upset or cry?

That's completely okay. There's no right or wrong way to feel. We can pause whenever you need to.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on you and your goals. Some people need only a few sessions, while others prefer longer-term support. We'll review this together.

How do I know if counselling is right for me?

You don't need to be certain. If you feel overwhelmed, stuck or anxious, counselling may help. A free call is a good way to find out.

Will you tell me what to do?

No. Counselling isn't about making decisions for you. It helps you understand yourself, notice patterns and find your own way forward.

I've had counselling before. Can I still come?

Yes, of course. We can talk about what helped before, what didn't, and what you'd like to be different this time.

Can I stop counselling whenever I want?

Yes. Where possible, it helps to talk it through together so we can reflect on your progress and next steps.

Do you work with young people?

I work with adults aged 18 and over.

Is this a crisis service?

No. If you are in crisis or feel unsafe, please call Lifeline on 0808 808 8000, Samaritans on 116 123, or 999 in an emergency.

Cancellation policy

If you need to cancel or rearrange, please give at least 24 hours' notice.

You don't have to have all the answers before you begin

Counselling offers a space to slow down, explore what's happening for you and make sense of things at your own pace. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
